Precision microsurgical procedures to retrieve viable sperm for biological fatherhood.
When sperm are not present in the ejaculate, they can often be retrieved directly from the reproductive tract using specialized aspiration or surgical techniques. At Urogyn, we utilize the most appropriate method based on the underlying cause of infertility.
Testicular Sperm Aspiration: A fine needle is inserted into the testis to aspirate tissue and sperm. Ideal for obstructive azoospermia and patients with normal sperm production.
Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration: Involves collecting sperm directly from the epididymis using a small needle. This is typically the first choice for obstructive cases like post-vasectomy.
Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration: An open surgical procedure using a microscope to find dilated tubules in the epididymis. It offers higher sperm counts and better quality for freezing.
Testicular Sperm Extraction: The ultimate solution for non-obstructive azoospermia. Micro-TESE uses high-power magnification to find islands of sperm production within the testis.
The choice of procedure depends on whether the azoospermia is Obstructive (blockage) or Non-Obstructive (production issue). While PESA and TESA are simpler, Micro-TESE (mTESE) is the most advanced option available globally for men with severe production issues, offering hope where other methods fail.
All retrieval procedures at Urogyn are performed in close coordination with our embryology lab. This ensures that retrieved sperm are immediately processed for ICSI or cryopreserved for future use.
